Prepared for the October 11, 2006 RAB Adak RAB
Prepared by Navy - Jim Brown, Gary Simmons and Mark Wicklein

The following is a brief narrative summary of the environmental work conducted by EFA NW during the 2006 field season on Adak.

Petroleum Site Remedies

Product recovery trenches were installed at South of Runway 18-36 and SWMU 62. A 1,500- cubic yard petroleum-contaminated soil pile was containerized and removed from Bering Hill for off-site disposition. Product recovery equipment was installed in wells at NMCB, South of Runway 18-36 and SWMU 62. Petroleum-contaminated soil was removed from the Tango Pad spill site, SA-82 Site, and potentially from the SA-77 Site. Metals and Roberts Landfill caps were repaired. Rommel stakes were removed from two areas, one near Roberts Landfill and the other near White Alice Landfill. All wastes were transferred off-island for disposal.

Area 303 Remedial Investigation\Feasibility Study

A subsurface investigation to define the quantity and limits of contamination between GCI and SWMU 62 was completed. Previously, USGS had identified this area as having an undefined groundwater contaminant plume. A subsurface investigation of the Tango Pad spill area was also completed to identify the quantity and limits of contamination there. The contractor abandoned 36 monitoring wells and repaired 45 monitoring wells at various locations in accordance with the Adak Well Repair and Abandonment Plan. Lastly, new monitoring wells were installed at NMCB (8), South of Runway 18-36 (7) and SWMU 62 (4). These wells will be used for monitoring and product recovery in the future.

Rifle Grenade Range (RG-01)

The Navy completed a non-time critical removal action (clearance) of the 16-acre Rifle Grenade (RG-01) range in the access-restricted area adjacent to Lake Andrew (Parcel 4). Navy will return next year to complete a geophysical survey to confirm the success of the removal action.

Free-Product Recovery

Petroleum product is being removed by passive skimmers placed in recovery wells at the NMCB, South of Runway, and SWMU 62 sites. Free-product recovery started in September 2006 and will continue at least through August 2007.

Long-Term Monitoring

In the fall of 2006, the Navy completed annual groundwater and landfill monitoring of 28 sites and over 200 well locations. This work was conducted in accordance with the Adak Comprehensive Monitoring Plan.

Institutional Controls Inspection

In the fall of 2006, the Navy completed an annual inspection of 47 IC sites to ensure institutional controls remain effective and reliable.

Tentative 2007 Field Work

The following is a bullet summary of the environmental work tentatively planned by EFA NW for the 2007 field season on Adak.

  • Lake Jean and Combat Range (C1-02) clearance

  • Engineering Controls (repairing or replacing existing controls, ie. fencing, signs, gates)

  • UXO Awareness (supplementing existing measures)

  • SA-77 soil removal (if not done in 2006)

  • Annual long-term monitoring

  • Annual institutional controls inspection

  • Marine monitoring

  • EOD Andrew Lake seawall sweep

  • Geophysical survey and re-acquiring of targets (if any) at Rifle Grenade range (RG-01)

  • Free-product recovery and additional soil sampling at 16 NFRAP sites
