The Navy has established engineering controls at the following ordnance areas on Navy Retained Lands:
Access restrictions, inspection of fencing and gates, public education, and excavation restrictions are the interim Engineering Controls that will be used to protect the public from exposure to ordnance. The interim engineering controls are fencing, signs and control gates at access points to each area. The ordnance institutional control is maintaining the existing ordnance awareness program. Island residents and visitors are required to attend an established ordnance awareness-training program. This program applies to the entire military reservation at Adak, including sites that are not part of OU B-1, and therefore is not a site-specific institutional control. This program is intended to familiarize on-island residents and visitors with the history of ordnance use, storage, handling and disposal on Adak Island; basic characteristics of ordnance items on Adak; and the procedures that should be followed if a suspected ordnance item is encountered. In addition to maintaining this program, deed notices or other legal instruments will also be used to inform future users of information related to past investigations for ordnance hazards. The final institutional controls, if any, will be determined upon completion of the OU B 2 ROD.
