Ordnance

OU B addresses ordnance explosive safety hazards and human health and ecological risks associated with ordnance-related chemicals. During years of active military activity at Adak, numerous munitions and explosives of concern (MEC) items were discovered during normal activity, and were removed and disposed of in accordance with military requirements at the time. It is estimated, based on Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Detachment records that over 75,000 individual MEC items were recovered between 1942 and 1996, the majority of them small arms ammunition. Based on these records and historical archive information, the Navy began an MEC investigation, removal and disposal program in 1996 to meet the requirements of the DoD Explosives Safety Board, EPA, and ADEC to protect human health and the environment and make the real estate suitable for transfer to TAC for the reasonably expected future land use.
